Cairo-Durham staging its musicals outside this year
Andrea Macko is reporting for Porcupine Soup the Cairo-Durham school musicals will be presented outside this year. A huge stage is currently under construction on the front lawn of the Cairo Elementary School on Main Street. Cabaret in the Attic will be presented June 5 and 11; The Last Five Years will be staged on June 4 and 12. “Cabaret in the Attic is a themed cabaret where six teenagers become storytellers after finding a storybook in an attic filled with adventures,” said music teachers Sarah Clermont and Nancy Trembacz. The production features songs from a variety of Broadway shows including Chicago, Shrek, Newsies, Wicked, Hairspray and more. Clermont and Trembacz described The Last Five Years as a “modern musical with a cool twist.” Students have been rehearsing for weeks. The stage was designed by teacher Tim Fisher, who is also the technical director of the shows. “He has designed the stage and is building it with Joe Scampoli, a professor at Columbia-Greene, and several parents,” said Clermont. No tickets are required for admission. Families or groups will be spaced six feet apart on the lawn and masks will be required for all audience members.
