HEAP benefits open on November 1

Oct 18, 2022 12:46 am

Liz Montgomery is reporting for Porcupine Soup the regular HEAP benefit for 2022-23 will open on November 1. Known as the Home Energy Assistance Program, HEAP can help eligible New Yorkers heat and cool their homes. According to the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, those eligible may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year and also be eligible for emergency HEAP benefits if they are in danger of running out of fuel or having their utility service shut off. Eligibility and benefits are based on income, household size, the primary heating source, and the presence of a household member who is under age six, age 60 or older, or permanently disabled. For a household of one, the maximum gross monthly income to qualify is $2,852. The amount increases based on the number of people in a home. For example, a family of four can earn up to $5,485 each month. For eligible homeowners, the Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement benefit can help with repairs or replacement of a furnace, boiler, and other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the primary heating source working. This benefit is available now. Eligible households can also receive energy efficiency services, including the cleaning of primary heating equipment. There is also chimney cleaning, minor repairs, and installation of carbon monoxide detectors or programmable thermostats if needed. Information is available at the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance website. Read the full story at pocupinesoup [dot] com.
