New York may lose two Congressional seats

Dec 23, 2020 5:30 am
Michael Macagnone reports for Roll Call that New York may lose two Congressional seats because of falling population in the 2020 census. New York looks to be the only state losing two seats in the House of Representatives, while California, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota will also have less Congressmembers. Texas would gain three seats and Florida two, while North Carolina, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, and Oregon would pick up a seat under the estimates released Dec. 22 by the Census Bureau. President Donald Trump directed the Census Bureau to exclude undocumented immigrants from the Census this year, and cut off the counting early, possibly affecting New York's results. New York's Independent Redistricting Commission is tasked with deciding the new district lines, and which two Congressional districts get eliminated. Read more about this story in Roll Call.
