Unaffiliated voter registration rises in New York

Dec 09, 2020 1:32 pm
Amanda Fries reports in the Times Union that there were large gains in voting registration in New York recently, and the party getting the most people to sign up turned out to be no party at all. Unaffiliated voter registration increased 22 percent in New York from 2015. There are now more unaffiliated voters in the state then Republicans by over 65,000 enrollees. Small parties, not listed on New York’s voter registration, had enrollment climb 28 percent, according to a Times Union analysis of voter registration data over the last five years. “We think that trend is an important one that should be sending a message to our leaders, that there are more and more people who are not happy with the two-party system,” said Martin Babinec, founder of the Upstate Jobs Party. “For us for the future, we feel there is a tremendous opportunity to engage disenfranchised voters who really have no voice.” Democrats and Republicans also had increases in voter registration, but small parties, and no party, had more.
