Claverack's Jeffrey Gibson named MacArthur 'genius' grant winner

The Daily Freeman is reporting Columbia County resident and Bard College faculty member Jeffrey Gibson has been named a 2019 MacArthur fellow. Recipients of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation's so-called genius grants each receive $625,000 over five years to use as they please. Gibson, 47, an artist-in-residence in Bard's Studio Arts Program, maintains a studio in Claverack. Gibson is a Choctaw-Cherokee artist "who incorporates his heritage into his multi-disciplinary work, which includes abstract sculptures, paintings, and prints," according to Bard College. The Chicago-based MacArthur Foundation also named Valeria Luiselli to the list of 26 fellows, as well. Luiselli, 36, is writer-in-residence in Bard's Written Arts Program. She is an award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction whose books have been published in more than 20 languages. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
