Carmen Henriquez is reporting for The Columbia Paper the town of Clermont is abuzz with rumors of Red Wing Sand and Gravel's plans to make changes to its mining operations. The company's Roe Jan Plant is located near Elizaville along the boundary between Dutchess and Columbia counties. Residents of Clermont turned out for a meeting of the town planning board last month expecting to discuss those changes, but the expected conversation did not happen after it was learned that Red Wing has not yet submitted an application for consideration. Despite this, residents insisted on asking questions, over the objections of planning board attorney Andrew Howard. Community members persisted, with some expressing confusion as to why they had been notified to attend the meeting. Speakers pointed out that because of changes to Clermont's zoning laws, the mine now falls into non-conforming use and after 20 years, it is almost exhausted. “Red Wing’s president informs us that the Roe Jan is rapidly approaching exhaustion of its native material,” a speaker said. At which point, the property would revert to the town. However, Red Wing seems to be suggesting that Roe Jan would operate differently than its intended use. Resident Charles Robinson previously asked the Clermont Town Board to get involved in an effort to stop the expansion of the mine and the use of County Route 19 to haul the materials. According to Robinson, the company's mining permit for its Clermont property will expire in September 2021. Red Wing did not return a call from The Columbia Paper seeking comment.
