Coxsackie water breaks put state correctional facility under restrictions

Jul 06, 2018 7:15 am
Casey Seiler is reporting for the Times Union the Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie spent the recent Independence Day holiday under water restrictions. The facility responded to a July 3 advisory issued by the village of Coxsackie, following the latest of four water main breaks since June 28. The prison water system draws principally from the village network. The situation required Greene to stagger showers and laundry use. The state Department of Health was aware of the situation in its role as the environmental health agency for Greene County. The restrictions were lifted late in the day, July 5. Coxsackie Mayor Mark Evans said the village does not have much of a water storage system, which increases the impact of multiple water main breaks within a short period of time. Evans said breaks usually occur during the colder months due to extreme cold or sudden thaws. "Why are we getting them this week? It's anybody's guess," he said.
