Onteora passes resolution against DeVos

Kemble reports in The Daily Freeman that the Onteora school district trustees voted Jan. 26 for a resolution asking the U.S. Senate to reject the nomination of Betsy DeVos for secretary of education. “We stand with the teachers ... and Parent Teacher Association when it comes to this issue,” board President Bobbi Schnell said. “We need a secretary of education on the federal level who’s equipped to handle the job and has a solid handle on what public education is and is willing to fully support public schools.” The Kingston school board passed a similar resolution earlier this month. Local resident Doug Eighmey disagreed with the board. “Just because this lady wasn’t a school teacher or president of the school board or superintendent of the school district, it does not disqualify her from being able to run a Department of Education,” he said.
