Legislators revive $44M bond resolution to fund jail project

Nov 08, 2017 7:50 am

Daniel Zuckerman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media a resolution to authorize $44 million in serial bonds to finance construction of a new Greene County Jail was approved by the county legislature’s Public Safety Committee, Mon., Nov. 6. The vote came following a meeting between various county officials and state Commission of Corrections Chairman Thomas A. Beilein last week. The meeting focused on the idea of a shared jail with Columbia County. Public Safety Committee chair Legislator William Lawrence of Cairo and other legislators oppose the shared jail idea. Lawrence said if people from Greene County were to be transferred to Columbia County, that jail's footprint would have to be expanded to accommodate those people. “I don’t see it as being a quick solution, I don’t see it as being a cheap solution,” Lawrence said. “Again it doesn’t make sense.” Lawrence introduced the bond resolution Monday night. Greene County Sheriff Greg Seeley was pleased the resolution passed and said the jail should remain in Greene County and not be shared with Columbia County. While there are concerns about cost, Seeley said the impact on residents’ tax bills would be minimal. The bond resolution now goes to the Finance Committee, then on to the full legislature for a vote, November 15. Read the full story at HudsonValley360 [dot] com.
