New York takes action on two 'Do Not Call' complaints

Sep 28, 2018 1:07 pm
Joseph Spector reports in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle that while complaints about New York's so-called "Do Not Call" registry doubled since 2014, the state only took action on two complaints. That's according to a new audit from the state Comptroller's Office. While there are about 450,000 complaints a year about the registry, two cases were referred for enforcement action in 2016 and 2017. “The Do Not Call Registry was created to help consumers avoid unwanted, nuisance calls from telemarketers, but requests to investigate violations of the law are going unanswered,” DiNapoli said in a statement. But many people who have signed up to not receive calls from unsolicited telemarketers still get the phone calls, according to multiple reports. Fines against companies violating the rules fell from $1.9 million in 2014 to $44,000 last year. Read the full story in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
