Marist will play at Duke, despite Cuomo

Aug 18, 2016 12:30 pm
Stephen Haynes and Phil Strum in The Poughkeepsie Journal report that Marist College will travel to North Carolina, against Gov. Andrew Cuomo's boycott, to play basketball against Duke in November. North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory signed HB2 earlier this year that excludes gender identity and sexual orientation from statewide anti-discrimination protections, and New York's Governor issued an executive order banning publicly funded, non-essential travel to North Carolina. That led to the University of Albany cancelling a basketball game against Duke. “The decision to play this basketball game does not diminish in any way our support for the LGBT community,” said Greg Cannon, Marist’s chief of public affairs. “It also doesn’t equate to a show of support for this regressive law.” Cuomo has recently started a boycott against North Carolina, and also a boycott against anyone boycotting Israel.
