Daniel Zuckerman is reporting at Hudson Valley 360 [dot] com Palenville will celebrate the 200th anniversary its founding on July 15 with a day-long celebration. The day will begin with a Ragamuffin Parade at 11 a.m., followed by a country fair until 5 p.m. The fair will feature children's games, a bouncy house, music by the Coxsackie-Athens Community Band and other musicians, blacksmith and tannery demonstrations by Eugene Edwards Jr. and a Palenville history tent. Jill Skupin Burkholder, a member of the nonprofit group organizing the celebration, Palenville The Hamlet, said Palenville was named for Jonathan Palen, a tanner. Once the tannery industry died, Palenville became a place where artists would stay and then hike up Kaaterskill Falls to paint the landscape. “You could say Palenville was the first artist’s colony,” Burkholder said. Proceeds from the country fair will benefit the effort to rebuild the Palenville swinging bridge, located off Route 23A, across from the Circle W Market.
