Coalition formed to push for changes to new tenant protection law

Dec 09, 2019 12:45 pm
Cayla Harris is reporting for the Times Union on a new coalition of landlords, property owners and tenants that has organized to rally against New York's newly enacted tenant protection law. Leaders of Under One Roof NY argue that the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 will leave landlords and property management companies struggling to pay their bills. The coalition officially formed December 2, and is led by members of the New York Capital Region Apartment Association. Its goal is not to repeal the law, just to amend it. The group is looking to simplify eviction processes, facilitate applications, and install new exemptions in requirements for short-term leases. Jaime Michelle Cain, a Rochester-based real estate attorney and association board member, said the act “basically overhauled all of the industry practices overnight” without input from landlords and other affected parties. Cain said the law set up some complicated rules that have stretched property owners' resources thin. Laura Felts, the executive director of United Tenants of Albany said the law helped implement a more fair process for renters. Tenant advocacy groups are standing by the legislation, noting there is still more to be done to address housing affordability statewide. Read the full story in the Times Union.
