Saugerties village considering solar program

Dec 15, 2020 5:45 am
The Daily Freeman is reporting the Saugerties Village Board has been asked to participate in a community aggregate solar program that would move residents from electricity provider Central Hudson to renewable sources of electricity. Community choice aggregation electricity purchasing was reviewed during a video conference meeting last week. At that meeting, Hudson Valley Energy representative Jeff Domanski asked the board members to join a program that is also being considered by town officials. “Reasons for going into [an electricity purchasing] marketplace ... is to try and beat what the utility company is getting for you on a month-to-month basis, and there’s a lot of good opportunities for that,” he said. “The second reason that people have done this is...to source cleaner electricity.” A community aggregate program allows communities to obtain bulk-purchasing discounts, reflected as the supply portion of a bill, while Central Hudson would still have charges for the delivery costs. Details were not provided on how much money would be saved under the program. During a presentation made earlier this year, Domanski said getting the best rates comes from having between 25,000 to 50,000 meters guaranteed to a specific electricity producer. The town has approximately 8,000 meters that could participate in the program. Information was not immediately available on the number of meters in the village alone. Village officials will discuss the program at a future meeting. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.
