Crimean Snow
2017
John Roach
"Crimean Snow" is a collision of shortwave and vinyl that alludes to the conflict in the Ukraine, but more broadly to the thought that radio transmissions cross any contentious boundaries. The project started however, with a old scratchy record Roach picked up on 7th street in the East Village in 1992: Zaparozhets za Dunaem, one of only a few Ukrainian Language operas. The work was assembled using samples from this record, some at 33rpm, some glacially slowed down to generate the static or sonic "snow" in the title. The radio broadcasts used were captured from Ukrainian, Russian and Crimean sources.
