Tune in for a special livestream broadcast of Water Chronicles ON AIR On the Spree, Berlin: Live environmental stream boxes will be located on the Insola platform (Berlin) during the live programme there in July, and on Channelsea river and ‘A Slice of Reality’ (London), during the live programme in September, open ears to the sonic worlds of each city.

These environmental streams will be interspersed with the live events in each city, and a curated feed from artists and friends of the projectSounds, songs, and radio art from a variety of contributors. Intertidal Anomaly: conversations from 'A Slice of Reality'

A bi-monthly show recorded throughout 2025 on board Richard Wilson’s millennium sculpture ‘A Slice of Reality’, with artist duo and guardians of the ship Blanc Sceol (Stephen Shiell and Hannah White).

Curated and produced by Stephen Shiell.

Episode #1: featuring the artist Richard Wilson, is an introduction to the site, its legacy and ongoing aliveness. Richard will also be giving an artists talk and performing live during the Water Chronicle Live programme in Berlin.

Episode #2: featuring the researcher, curator & educator Margarida Mendes, who has also contributed a listening piece ‘The Well of Mothers’ to the ‘Water Chronicles Live’ programme in Berlin. Recorded on the Slice with Margarida in presence remotely, they navigate non verbal sound worlds and discuss their collaborative practice with watery worlds.

Episode #5: a conversation is with Federico Forestiero, Nicol Rivera and Fiete Wulff, the collaborators behind 'Insola', who are curating Water Chronicles LIVE in London in September. It takes place on the Spree, stretching the boundaries of the Slice to another crack in the system, the free floating arts platform that’s part of cultural water based community organisation Spree Publik.

An Ear to River ~counterflows

This piece asks us to listen with the Channelsea River, a recovering waterway in East London, and home to London’s largest combined sewage outfall, bringing us into contact with a slippery journey through underground pipes old and new, precarious river living, court battles, hope and uncertainty. The piece was originally created for the Radioactive On Water podcast series.

This piece was made from field recordings made at the River Thames foreshore at Enderby’s Wharf in 2014, capturing sounds at a moment in time while the area was undergoing transition from post-industrial riverside to densely-populated waterfront housing. The work was commissioned for Over Time, a project curated by artist Anne Robinson.

These soundscapes are shaped by an acoustic ecology approach, where listening functions as an ecological and relational practice rather than documentation. Developed through extended, site-responsive engagement with the Channelsea Basin, the recordings emerge from long periods of attentive listening to the river and its surrounding infrastructure. Over time, the soundscape reveals its own rhythms, timbres, and latent musical structures—natural reverbs, delays, loops, and resonances produced by the space itself. Field recordings and live streams were captured using a range of listening devices, including hydrophones, geophones, contact microphones, radio transmitters and receivers, and bat detectors. These tools extend perception beyond human hearing, translating submerged, ultrasonic, vibrational, and electromagnetic activity into sound, and presenting the basin as an interconnected acoustic system.

ADrift on the Lea from the Greenway Channelsea River crossing to Cody Dock

A longform piece composed by drifting in a kayak armed with hydrophones on the Channelsea River. On an ebbing, late autumnal tide, the river took me downstream past the confluence with the Prescott Channel to my egress at Cody Dock nestling on Bow Creek. No processing has been added and the sounds you hear are purely those I heard on that October evening in 2025.

'Whistles' and 'Black Betty/Pyrotechnics’

Since 1983, Bow Gamelan Ensemble - made up of Richard Wilson, Anne Bean and the late Paul Burwell - have inspired generations of artists with their radical practices and explosive performances. Charged with their individual virtuosity in performance art, avant-garde music and kinetic sculpture, their sound installations and performances are immersed in an orchestra of instruments made from scrap metal, electric motors, river barges and domestic objects including glass sheets, light bulbs and fireworks. A dissonance between 'noise' and 'meaningful utterance’ that will astonish the ears and ravish the imagination with unearthly magic. Both pieces feature Z'EV and the Thames Steam Launch Co., and ‘Black Betty’ also features Eel Pie Marine boat yard.
