Daniel Johnson reports in the Register Star the West Ghent Fire Department and Greenport Rescue were dispatched around 4 p.m., Sun., Apr. 7, to a brush fire on Route 66 in West Ghent. The cause was found to be accidental and led to nearly 22 acres of burned land. The fire came within feet of a home located on Humane Society Rd. The property sustained some damage. No injuries were reported. “When we arrived, this field was heavily engulfed in fire,” Chief Jim Cesternino, of the West Ghent Fire Department said. “Our first priority was to keep it from the house.” Cesternino said this is the first brush fire of 2013 to spread like this, but it is not that unusual for the area.
