Early voting first weekend turnout 'surprisingly low'

Oct 30, 2019 12:56 am
Cayla Harris reports for the Times Union that more than 2,800 Capital Region residents cast ballots this weekend in New York's first days of early voting. But that was fewer people voting than many election observers predicted. More people voted on the sunny Saturday, than on the rainy Sunday. Albany County Board of Elections Commissioner Rachel Bledi called the turn out “surprisingly low,” and said most early voters would have voted on election day any other year. “It’s a new concept, and so I do think it will just take a little bit of time for people to get used to it,” Bledi said. Rensselaer County had the lowest early voting totals in the Capital Region, with just 362 ballots cast on Oct. 26 and Oct. 27. Rensselaer officials failed to set up early voting in Troy, even though more people live there than anywhere else in the county. Read more about this story in the Times Union.
