Jan 26, 2017 7:00 am

Daniel Zuckerman is reporting in The Daily Mail officials renamed a section of Route 23 in Windham the Wayne Speenburgh Memorial Highway during a ceremony Wed., Jan. 25. State Assembly member Pete Lopez and Sen. George Amedore helped unveil the sign with Speenburgh’s widow, Debra. At a brief ceremony at Centre Church on Route 23, Debra accepted the legislation signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo authorizing the renaming of the road. She said, “We all know the mountaintop was Wayne and that’s true. He would be so taken back by this, it’s just amazing.” Legislator Lori Torgersen, who represents Windham, said, “I was fortunate enough to know Wayne as a friend. I think it’s a perfect and due honor.” Speenburgh, a Republican, represented Coxsackie, and served as chairman of the Legislature for many years. He spent his youth in Prattsville and was a 1962 graduate of Windham-Ashland-Jewett school. Speenburgh was also a U.S. Postal Service administrator. He died in September 2015 following a long illness. Read the full story in The Daily Mail.
