Fire in Cairo
May 11, 2011 1:36 pm
WGXC volunteer Joan Geitz calls in from Cairo saying a fire on Main St. has shut down the town library and Town Hall, and blocked off Main St. The fire, next door to 526 Main St., started a little after 12:30 p.m., according to Geitz, who says firefighters were initially concerned about a propane explosion. WNYT updates this story, writing that the fire was at 530 Main St., and that Cairo Fire Chief Gerald Buckley told the station the woman living in the house, a widow of a Cairo firefighter, was not home at the time. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion and exposure for the fire, which the chief said appeared to be started by accident in the attic.
