that lead and asbestos will need to be removed no matter what Greene County Legislators want to do with the former Greene County jail in Catskill. During a Nov. 18 Greene County Legislature Public Safety Committee meeting, Deputy Greene County Administrator Warren Hart explained there are other concerns besides health and costs. “Both the jail and the sheriff’s office are part of the Eastside Historic District,” Hart said. He estimated it would cost $10.7 million to renovate the sheriff’s office, the main jail complex and the newest section of the jail known as D-Block. Tearing down the buildings and putting up a new 5,000-square-foot office would cost around $1.2 million. Putting parking lots on the property would cost a little less than an office. Catskill resident Pat Ruck asked, “So this will either be a wet demo, which is toxic, for lack of a better word, or abatement,” Ruck said. “Will this be a dollar-and-cents decision or a health-and-safety decision?” Hart said it would be a few months before the county decides what to do with the more than 100-year-old building in the center of the village.
