W.T. Eckert reports in The Daily Mail the largest alternative to incarceration in Greene County is looking to expand. The Greene County Legislature Public Safety Committee will create a part-time position for its Alternative to Incarceration program under the county’s probation department. According to committee chairman William Lawrence, the individual hired would work with the various stakeholders to identify work locations. Judges then assign offenders to community service at those locations, instead of jail. Without this option, offenders “...can’t go to work, they can’t support their family and this gives them an alternative to incarceration, which makes sense for everybody,” Lawrence said. Tasks range from raking parks, painting, cleaning and picking up garbage. Read the full story in The Daily Mail. NOTE: William Lawrence is a WGXC programmer.
