Athens officials want town to take over community center

Daniel Zuckerman reports for Columbia-Greene Media that the town of Athens may take over the Athens Community Center from the village. The village board may adopt a resolution saying that turning over the building to the town is in the best financial interest of village residents. Athens residents can comment on the proposal at a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13. that may be held at the Athens Volunteer Fire Department. “Hopefully there won’t be too much opposition,” Mayor Peter Alberti said. “I would really like to make a resolution to pass and turn it over.” The town wants to turn the bathroom on the first floor into an elevator, move town court to the first floor, and the town office to the second floor.
