Cairo church holds last service on Christmas Eve

Dec 24, 2020 6:00 am
Andrea Macko reports at Porcupine Soup that the Calvary Episcopal Church of Cairo holds its final service ever on Christmas Eve. “The story is simple and all too common,” said the Rev. John E. Miller, a priest there since 1998. “Membership has declined over the years, people move away and people pass away, and new interest is not generated.” The Calvary EpiscopalChurch was organized in 1832. The building was completed after donations were collected in 1834, and a bell for the tower was purchased in 1841 for $175. There were only eight communicants in 1837, according to the Cairo Historical Society, and, as it closes, the church is even smaller. Miller says, “attendance has dwindled to five people at our best-attended services,” which includes Miller and his wife Kathie who plays the organ. The final service Dec. 24 is at 9:30 p.m. Read more about this story at Porcupine Soup.
