Audio Feature: WGXC Congressional Report 20190313

Mar 11, 2019 9:45 am
Here's the week in the news for Rep. Antonio Delgado (D-Rhinebeck). The Fivethirtyeight.com website reports that, so far, Delgado votes with Donald Trump's positions zero percent of the time. Click here to download or play an audio version of this report (5:52).

• Delgado voted March 8 for H.R. 1, or the For the People Act, which would update ethics rules, expand voting rights, and require presidential candidates to disclose tax returns. It passed 234-193, on party lines. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he will not bring the bill for a vote in the other chamber, so it has zero possibility of becoming a law.

The Daily Freeman is reporting U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado has announced the creation of an agriculture advisory committee to be made up of farmers and agriculture leaders from every county in New York's 19th Congressional District. The Rhinebeck Democrat made the announcement Mar. 4. Delgado said the 40-member group will provide input on the ways Congress can better support small upstate farms. He said the 19th District is the eighth most rural congressional district in the country and the third most rural district represented by a Democrat, with more than 5,000 farms and 8,000 farm operations in the district. He said the best ideas for empowering farmers come from those who actually devote their time to the issues every day. "I'm looking forward to working with the advisory committee to prioritize small and mid-tier family-owned farms who are too often marginalized by Congress," Delgado said. Among those chosen as members of the advisory committee: Columbia County Farm Bureau President Jim Davenport; Hudson Valley Agribusiness Executive Director Todd Erling; Greene County Farm Bureau President James Van Orden; and Bari Zeiger of Frost Valley Farm. Read the full story in the Daily Freeman.

On March 5 the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Burn Pit Registry Enhancement Act 416-0, with local Rep. Antonio Delgado as one of the cosponsors. The bill amends the Airborne Hazards and Burn Pit Registry of 2013, that tracks data on veterans exposed to toxic chemicals and fumes from open-air burn pits used at military sites in Iraq and Afghanistan to dispose of waste. “Whether it’s conversations with members of my Veterans Advisory Committee or other veterans across the district, it’s clear that Congress is lagging behind on addressing mental and physical health issues that veterans suffer from outside of direct combat – and burn pit exposure is one example of that,” Delgado said in a press release. “To successfully address burn pit exposure, we need all the information we can get. I’m proud to be a cosponsor of this bill to enhance the Burn Pit Registry, and I hope that the Senate will take action on this quickly.”

Rep. Antonio Delgado, who represents New York's 19th Congressional District, will hold his 10th and 11th town hall meetings March 9 and March 10, in Schoharie County, and Broome County. “A core responsibility of mine as a congressman is engaging with folks and hearing what’s most important to them, whether they agree with me or not. And that’s exactly what town halls allow me to do,” Delgado said in a press release. “From the very start of my term, the town halls have been invaluable in terms of learning how I can best serve and meet the needs of the communities here at home.” Former Rep. John Faso did not hold any traditional town hall meetings, holding just one public forum with special rules about attendance and questions. Delgado's staff has also created live webstreams for each of his previous town halls, although at meetings in Germantown and Tannersville, there was not enough broadband service to stream the events without many interruptions. WGXC has broadcast each of Delgado's town hall meetings.
