Moose spotted in Ancram

Sep 22, 2017 6:30 am

Ann Friedman is reporting for Columbia-Greene Media on the moose siting along Waldorf Ridge in Ancram on Thu., Sep. 21. Bob Mathews, the owner of Depot Deli in Copake Falls, spotted the large mammal while on his way to work with co-worker Melissa Dipper. Rick Georgeson, the public information officer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, said that while moose are uncommon in Columbia County, it is not unheard of to see one on occasion. “They come over from Massachusetts,” he said. “Typically, they’re young males looking for their own territory and have been pushed out.” Ancram Town Supervisor Art Bassin said he has never seen a moose in Columbia County before. “It’s terrific,” he said. “After all, they were here first.” Anyone who sees a moose in New York is asked to submit a moose-sighting report at dec [dot] NY [dot] gov.
