No progress on Greene County Jail

Apr 14, 2018 12:15 am
Daniel Zuckerman reports for Columbia-Greene Media Greene County lawmakers discussed building a new Greene County Jail that would cost over $67 million at a meeting April 11. But the project seems like it is at something of a deadlock with not enough votes to raise taxes on Greene County citizens to pay for it, and not enough votes to fund studies of cheaper alternatives. Legislators are also discussing sharing the Columbia County Jail, or rehabbing the existing jail on Bridge Street in Catskill. That facility, a century old, was named one of the five worst jails in the state by the state Commission of Correction in a report released Feb. 14. Something needs to be done, but, after years of talking, nothing is getting done. The current Greene County Jail is already sharing services with other counties, with 28 inmates boarded out to the jails in Columbia and Ulster counties this week. Greene County Chamber of Commerce President Jeff Friedman wrote the Greene County Legislature this week, asking them to pay for studies of all three options. “What we asked you was, explore every possibility,” Friedman said, after Athens Legislator Lee Palmateer interpreted his letter in a different way. “You do not have all the facts about the shared jail, you haven’t even done the feasibility study,” Friedman said. No consensus was reached at the meeting, and no progress was made on any solutions. WGXC had a live webstream of the meeting, which can be downloaded or played here.
