Reprieve for Bangladesh's ship breakers

Jun 22, 2011 12:58 am

Al Jazeera English reports:
Ship breaking, the business of dismantling old vessels and recycling parts as scrap metal, was banned in Bangladesh last year. Environmentalists had long fought against it and the pollution it caused. That ban was lifted in March on conditions of higher environmental standards and workers' safety. The industry has time till July to prove itself. At Chittagong port, hundreds of old ships are waiting to be beached and dismantled. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports.
