WGXC Congressional Report: 20191007

Oct 07, 2019 12:01 am
This is WGXC's Congressional Report, tracking the votes, words, and actions of Rep. Antonio Delgado, a Democrat from Rhinebeck representing the 19th Congressional District, and Paul Tonko, a Democrat from Amsterdam from the 20th Congressional District. The Fivethirtyeight.com website reports that, so far, the first-term Congressperson Delgado votes with Donald Trump's positions 4.3 percent of the time. Since Democrats took over the House of Representatives Tonko also votes with Trump's positions 2.1 percent of the time. In the previous Congressional session, Tonko voted with Trump 22.6 percent of the time. Click here to download or play an audio version of this report (3:51).

Kerry Picket reports for the Washington Examiner that Rep. Antonio Delgado is largely mimicking what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is saying about impeaching the president. On Sept. 27 Pelosi said, "This is a sad time for our country," and Oct. 2 at a town hall meeting in Rhinebeck Delgado said, "This is sad. It's a sad moment in this country's history." Previously Pelosi had written about "a grave new chapter of lawlessness" while Delgado, a Democrat representing the 19th Congressional District, said, "We are literally about to embark on something that does not happen all that often in our country's history. It's a grave, serious environment that we're in.” Both are mirroring Democratic talking points on the issue. But Delgado claims what he says are not talking points. “It’s not a talking point. I prefer you not call it a talking point. You’re attributing words to me," Delgado said. "I’ve used a host of different words. I’ve used 'sad.' I’ve used 'sober.' I’ve used 'serious.'” Read more about this story at the Washington Examiner.

Matt Hunter reports for Spectrum News that on Oct. 3, New York Senator Chuck Schumer, and Reps. Paul Tonko and Antonio Delgado, announced three bills set to be introduced in Congress to address limousine safety, almost a year after 20 people died in a limo crash in Schoharie. The representatives were touting the SAFE Limos Act, the Take Unsafe Limos Off the Road Act, and the End the Limo Loophole Act. The Oct. 6, 2018 Schoharie accident took place at the intersection of state routes 30 and 30A. Schumer, Tonko, and Delgado each commented on the bills: (Click here to download or play a short excerpt of Schumer, Tonko, and Delgado commenting. Cayla Harris reports in the Albany Times Union that both Reps. Paul Tonko and Antonio Delgado hosted community events Oct. 4 about rural broadband service with Federal Communications Commissioners. Delgado's event was held at Columbia-Greene Community College, where the phones of attendees all said, "No Service." "Clearly, every address that gets electricity should get broadband," said David Berman, the co-chair of Connect Columbia, a citizens group. "Just like electricity, which runs many devices essential to our lives, large-capacity communication capability is far more than voice, internet, email and tweets." WGXC broadcast the Delgado event, and has a recording in the WGXC Audio Archives. Delgado also held a town meeting Oct. 5 broadcast by WGXC from Otsego County, and the first-term Congressperson gave an opening statement about impeachment. Emilie Munson reports in the Albany Times Union that after Delgado announced last week that he was in favor of impeachment, the Republican National Committee began airing a TV commercial locally attacking his support for an inquiry into removing the president. Delgado shot back on Oct. 5 by airing his own new ad. The RNC is spending $2 million on ads targeting more than 60 Democrats around the country, and trying to shore up support for the president.

• Paul Tonko does list any public events this week on his website. Antonio Delgado lists public appearances on his website only if his staff organizes the events. He has none listed this week.
