a href="https://www.timesunion.com/business/article/Artificial-intelligence-could-impact-half-of-jobs-13445354.php">Brian Nearing is reporting for the Times Union a recent report by the Albany-based Rockefeller Institute of Government looks at the potential impact of artificial intelligence on New York's labor force. The Institute concluded that roughly 4.8 million of the state's jobs, more than half, could be automated using the technology currently available or anticipated in the near future. The report predicts that AI will have an impact on how New Yorkers work — particularly those in jobs that involve basic, repetitive actions. Hardest hit could be retail salespeople, cashiers and secretaries and administrative assistants, fields that account for about a third of the current jobs in the state. About 2.5 million of those jobs could be at risk, said study author Laura Schultz, the institute's senior economist. Schultz said it is not all bad. While some jobs will be lost or changed, others will likely be created — making it important for workers to update education and work skills over the course of their careers. How the state might prepare for the expansion of AI into its workforce remains unclear. A bill that would have had the governor and the Legislature create an 11-member commission to study AI and its impacts was referred to the Government Operations Committee on Jan. 16; however, the measure is without a Senate sponsor.
