Community Conversations is an opportunity to join local experts and community members virtually. This program series addresses important issues, from affordable farmland to building a community forest, and explores how they connect to conservation. One-hour Zoom sessions will include brief presentations, time for questions and answers, and the opportunity to connect with others.

This month, we will explore how the conservation of birds and land management practices inform and support one another.

Ben Nickley, Executive Director of the Berkshire Bird Observatory, will be joined by Heidi Bock, Vice President of Conservation at CLC, to discuss MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) research to discuss MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) research and Kestrel conservation work conducted at Ooms this past summer. Bock will highlight how CLC manages the land at Ooms for grassland birds and specific management practices utilized at the site. Nickley will speak about the mission of the Berkshire Bird Observatory and share why researching bird populations at sites like Ooms is so important.

Part conversation led by Mike Amari of Chosen Family and part DJ set by a WGXC volunteer, the series highlights local artists, musicians, venue owners and bookers, and record label owners.

Youth Mission Outreach and In Christ United Church are collaborating with Reach Out Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church to present "Journey Through Bethlehem." This event allows families to experience life in biblical times through hands-on activities and storytelling. The event features various "shops" like a pottery shed and a carpentry shop, as well as a nativity scene, to create a full, interactive experience. Participants can make crafts, sample treats and learn about Jesus' birth while engaging with costumed characters. This one night event will be held Saturday, December 20th from 2:00pm to 7:00pm on the grounds of Reach Out Church, 241 Crum Elbow Road, Hyde Park, NY. The Mountain Top Historical Society (MTHS) of Greene County warmly invites you to start the New Year off on the right foot! Join us for a truly lovely and invigorating 4-mile round trip jaunt from the MTHS campus, winding through the majestic Catskill Forest Preserve, to the breathtaking Kaaterskill Falls. Begin 2026 surrounded by the stunning beauty of nature and the warm spirit of community. We can’t wait to share this festive beginning with you! Registration is required. Difficulty Level: Primarily flat with minimal incline and decline. Suitable for a wide range of hiking levels. About 1.5 miles into the hike, there are some benches available for sitting and resting if needed.

Finegan Ferreboeuf and Jason Gold, the Farmers of Steelbow Farm in Ancram, will be joined by Terence Duvall, Director of Land Protection & Stewardship at CLC, to discuss affordable farmland access and Steelbow Farm’s transition to Ancram. Duvall will provide an overview of affordable farmland models, highlighting CLC’s protection of this farm through a ground lease model and the search for new farmers. Ferreboeuf and Gold will then share their farming history, how they came to this property, and what’s next at Steelbow Farm!

Local writers and musicians come together for a live night of resistance at the Avalon Lounge, reading from banned books and poems, and performing songs that have been censored or challenged. They’re banning it. We’re performing it. The event will raise funds for WGXC community radio while shining a light on growing efforts to limit free expression. Come listen, stand up, and support local voices refusing to be silenced. Wave Farm seeks a technician to maintain and troubleshoot organizational IT infrastructure including network management, hardware, and systems administration.

Wave Farm, an international transmission arts organization that operates WGXC 90.7-FM Radio for Open Ears. Wave Farm is based in New York’s Hudson Valley with brick and mortar locations in Acra, Catskill, and Leeds, NY.

The IT Consultant will install, configure, and troubleshoot hardware, software, and peripheral system components through on-site and remote support. They will monitor and troubleshoot backups, interfaces to equipment, software, and organizational systems including:

Internet

• WiFi networks at all Wave Farm locations, including static IP and DNS

Hardware

• Storage, OS, and software updates (ensuring compatibility)
• New hardware acquisitions

Software

• WGXC broadcast automation (Radiologik) and other organizational platforms and tools (Logmein, etc.) customizing in conjunction with other organizational systems
• Vendor communication as needed

Cloud-based Productivity and Collaboration Tools

• Support organizational leadership in management of Wave Farm’s Google Workspace, Airtable, Dropbox, Zoom, etc.

Cybersecurity

• Support organizational leadership in management of Wave Farm’s password management
• Advise the organization on security issues and implement ways to protect the organization from potential hacks and other IT-related risks

Qualifications
Ideal applicants have expertise in Mac OS, but are also proficient in Windows and Linux when needed. Applicants should have a strong understanding of networking fundamentals including understanding of DNS, TCP/IP, and firewall configurations in a Mac environment. Scripting skills, including AppleScript and shell scripting, are preferred. Successful candidates conduct themselves with professionalism and have a proclivity for detailed documentation, strong problem solving and communication skills, and a commitment to Wave Farm’s mission and programs.

The snow leaves amazing traces of the animals who have passed by!

Join CLC to learn more about winter tracking with Dan Yacobellis of Tamakoce Wilderness Programs for a guided exploration of the Taghkanic Community Forest. The specific land we’ll be trekking is considered a “pinch point,” meaning that animals searching for undisturbed land often travel through this area. In the past, signs of bears, otters, and bobcats have been found here!

The Jacob Leisler Institute for the Study of Early New York History, in collaboration with the Hudson Area Library, hosts this in-person presentation with Professor Rosenblatt on the Zenger trial. The landmark 1735 trial of New York printer John Peter Zenger, which acquitted him for seditious libel in publishing articles critical of New York’s colonial governor, established the power of a jury to function as a check on government power and inspired the movement for freedom of the press later enshrined in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Its importance today is as great as it was in the eighteenth century.

Teen Intro to Stage Acting is an eight-week theatre and improv class for ages 13–17 at Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill. Designed for beginners and the creatively curious alike, the class introduces students to theatre games, improvisation, ensemble work, and foundational acting skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.Taught by Timothy Dunn, Associate Artistic Director of Bridge Street Theatre, the class emphasizes confidence, collaboration, and creative risk-taking. Students will explore storytelling, character, listening, and physical expression while learning how actors work together to build scenes and performances.

The focus is not on auditions or competition, but on play, curiosity, and discovering the joy of working as part of a creative ensemble. Runs Saturdays from January 31 through March 21, 10:30 am–1:30 pm.

Winter fun for the whole family! Festivities include an artisan market, educational demonstrations, s’more making, snowshoeing, and sledding (weather permitting).

Artist Maryna Bilak and her husband (and sous chef!) Maurice Haughton host this Ukrainian cooking demonstration, where they will be making traditional Varenyky and Vinegret Salad for all to taste! Varenyky are traditional Ukrainian stuffed dumplings, similar to Polish pierogi, made from dough, filled with potatoes, boiled until they float, and served with cheese sauce and fried onions. They are a beloved comfort food, considered a national dish, often prepared for special occasions and holidays. Vinegret is one of the most popular salads in Ukraine, made from diced, cooked root vegetables mixed with sauerkraut, dressed simply with sunflower oil. Despite its name, which comes from the French “vinaigrette,” it’s typically dressed with oil rather than vinegar. This vibrant, earthy salad is a staple in Slavic cuisine, served as a side dish or appetizer, especially during holidays. Hudson Area Library Community Room.

Shaker Museum hosts an evening presentation on the life of Mother Ann Lee, founder of American Shakerism. While women held little stature in 18th-century England, a young woman named Ann Lee came to prominence as a spiritual leader in a movement that came to be known as the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, more commonly called Shakers. Using the recent film The Testament of Ann Lee as a starting point, Collections Manager Sharon Duane Koomler will provide a short, illustrated presentation and show several objects from the collection connected with Mother Ann.
