Malang Jobarteh is a Kora player from Gambia, Africa, now residing in New York, where he is a popular performer and instructor and has played with numerous musicians such as Boubacar Diebate, Bela Fleck, and Dialy Kounda. A Kora is a 21-string harp-like instrument traditionally made from a large gourd and wooden neck, and has historically been used in storytelling. Malang will sing, play, and share stories about his heritage, bringing a celebration of his homeland’s music to the library.

You're invited to join Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm every Thursday to help tackle the invasive species that threaten the health of the Preserve. Volunteers will learn how to identify and manage a different invasive species every week.

Curious magazine & gift shop in Midtown Kingston hosts a happy hour with Lee Clay Johnson, who will read from his new novel, Bloodline. Johnson was born and raised around Nashville, Tennessee, in a family of bluegrass musicians. His novel Nitro Mountain won the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction from the American Academy of Arts & Letters. Bloodline was published this summer as the inaugural release of the new Panamerica Books imprint, edited by Gary Fisketjon of Knopf, Random House and most recently the literary broadsheet County Highway. Light refreshments starting at 6:30pm, reading and book signing at 7.

Greetings, art lovers! This year ArtEast is celebrating its 20th year of presenting the ArtEast Open Studio Tour (that’s a lot of art!). This annual art event happens over two weekends: October 18-19 and October 25-26, 11:00am – 5:00pm each day during the most beautiful time of the year in the Hudson Valley. This year's participating artists include artists working across a diverse range of media and styles, with something to impress every visitor. You can see painters, sculptors, photographers, mixed-media, assemblage, woodworking, fiber, pottery – WHEW! That is a lot to see. Luckily studios are open for two weekends so if you run out of time the first weekend you’ve got the following weekend to see the ones you missed.

Another fun aspect to visiting the artists in their studios is you may come across the special treat of viewing live demonstrations by the artists of the techniques they use and apply to their works of art. What a great opportunity to really learn about the rich artistic environment of this area. Within each of these disciplines there is a depth of styles and expressions that each talented artist integrates into their artwork. In addition to being available to share their creative vision with art lovers, all of the artists will have original works of art on view.

This is a family-friendly, self-guided tour that takes you through the country roads of the Hudson Valley. Need a map and addresses of the artists? Our annual tour of Cedar Park Cemetery, led by Kelley Drahushuk of Spotty Dog Books & Ale, is in its eighth year. Kelley's talk at the library, Raising the Dead: Tales from Hudson's Crypts, was so popular we began this tour and it has become a much-loved yearly event. This year, in conjunction with our Hudson: A History of Whaling & Maritime Commerce exhibit, Kelley has added new graves of whaling captains, their wives and others.
