There will be activities for all ages, joy and connections in the garden, plus snacks and treats!

You're invited to join Stewardship Coordinator Garrett Chisholm every Thursday to help tackle the invasive species that threaten the health of the Preserve. Volunteers will learn how to identify and manage a different invasive species every week.

February 6, 2025: Basic Audio Concepts 

Session objectives include an overview of common and useful terms related to acoustic, electronic, and digital ecologies, with a technical focus on audio transduction and microphone varieties. Additional topics for discussion include psychoacoustics—the branch of science studying the psychological responses associated with sound—with a focus on physical spatial considerations and panning/width in recording.

March 6, 2025: Filters

Session objectives include an introduction to common concepts related to filters in audio production, including frequency response, polar pattern, and equalization. Participants will also learn about The Fletcher Munson Curve, frequency masking, and infrasound, and how to apply these concepts to your work. We will also consider recording height and how to address unwanted plosives and sibilance.

April 3, 2025: Considering Loudness when Recording

Session objectives include strategies for achieving desired “depth” in your recordings. Topics include gain staging, dynamic range, compression, and the concept of distance in recording, including reverb and distortion.

May 1, 2025: Editing Bootcamp

Editing bootcamp! We will cover hotkeys, fades, matching takes, punching in/out, layering tracks, and bus processing. Participants will learn shortcuts for quicker and better edits, as well as bulk import/export strategies.

June 5, 2025: Creative processing

Session objectives include strategies for creating your own audio effects (FX). Topics include delays, filters, autopan, and time stretching. Participants will learn about sequences FX and FX automation in order to achieve the sounds you are imagining.

July 3, 2025: Multitrack Mixing

Session objectives include strategies for mixing multitrack sessions for full height, width, and depth without murkiness. The goal of this session is to understand how to make multiple tracks fit together in a mix. Attendees will participate in critical listening for frequency range, dynamics, and headroom.

August 7, 2025: The Physical Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include an overview of crucial care and maintenance of recording equipment to ensure longevity of your tools, including a hands-on introduction to soldering and light electronic repairs.

September 4, 2025: The Intangible Components of Recording Audio

Session objectives include discussions about analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion and digital audio processing. Specific topics will include block size, sample rate, bit depth, compression, streaming, and physical media. Additional topics include how best to manage computer resources in large sessions, latency for high track count, and CPU intensive processing.

October 2, 2025: Understanding Monitoring Sources and Taking it to the Stage

Session objectives include a conceptual overview of possible monitoring sources: speakers, headphones, and subwoofers, as well as the impacts of the space or room on your recording quality. Additional topics will include techniques for recording live performance, including ringing out microphones, PA system safety, microphone techniques, and streaming.

November 6, 2025: Taking It to the Field

Session objectives include field recording tools, principles, refinement, and processing.

Jen Kutler is a multidisciplinary artist and Technical Director of Wave Farm. Kutler modifies found objects that are cultural signifiers of power, gender, queerness, and intimacy to create atypical instruments and sculptures. Her performances feature many of her instruments incorporated with immersive field recordings to explore common and discrepant experiences of familiar social tones in immersive sound and media environments. We are kicking off this year’s QFEST with an intimate journey through the life of singer and LGBTQ+ icon, Q Lazzarus (aka Diane Luckey). Working as a NYC cab driver, Lazzarus had the good fortune to pick up film director Jonathan Demme, who – after she played her demo tape for him – chose to feature Lazzarus and her music in FOUR of his films: “Something Wild,” “Married to the Mob,” “Philadelphia,” and – most famously – “Silence of the Lambs.”

And then she vanished.

Absent for 25 years, Lazzarus returned to earning money as a driver when happened to pick up filmmaker Eva Aridjis Fuentes. Recognizing Lazzarus, Fuentes convinced her to make this documentary, sharing her story in her own words, music, and lyrics. Sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious, “Goodbye Horses” stands as a moving testament to the exceptionally talented, yet vastly under-appreciated, Q Lazzarus. Not Rated. 103 minutes.

The Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS) is thrilled to announce the launch of the MHLS Library Road Trip, a collaborative program among the sixty-six (66) MHLS member libraries in Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Putnam, and Ulster counties. This exciting initiative encourages community members to visit the 70 library buildings of our member libraries during the program timeframe, from June 6 through October 18, 2025.

You Can pick up a map at any participating library, and get it stamped at each one that you visit. Participants can earn souvenirs along the way!

You're invited to join Hudson’s favorite “it girl,” Trixie Starr, for a special 30th anniversary screening of the cult documentary Wigstock: The Movie. Capturing the spirit and spectacle of the iconic annual drag festival held in New York City’s East Village in the late 1980s and early ’90s, the film blends live performance footage, behind-the-scenes moments, and intimate interviews into a joyous celebration of life, liberty, and the pursuit of big hair.

Based on a photo album discovered on-line by Scott Koster, of college-aged people living, working, and discovering the Catskill Mountains! We will follow some of the places visited by these adventuresome young people.
We will break this hike into a morning and an afternoon section. It is advised to bring a lunch, we will stop at the Catskill Mountain House site for lunch before we continue with the afternoon portion.

Morning portion: South Mountain Trails: We will go from the Mountain House site to Boulder Rock by way of the abandoned trail called the “Circuit of South Mountain”. These young people from communities in New York and beyond were summer workers at the Catskill Mountain House in 1925, the year after the Kaaterskill Hotel burned. They visited the site and stood by a well pump in what had been a courtyard which we visited on our hike to Kaaterskill Hotel in May. They also made friends (based on photos with the boys carrying instrument cases) with boys from the band that performed at South Lake pavilion dances.

Afternoon portion: North Mountain Trails: We will walk from the Mountain House site along the blue trail to Jacob’s Ladder and Bear’s Den. We’d be able to find the site of the ladder based on other photos and one of the girls climbing it. Along the way we will pass the original Artist’s Rock (based on 1860s stereographs) and on to Prospect Rock, Lake View Pinnacle (the original Sunset Rock) and enjoy the iconic view from the top of Bear’s Den.

Join us this summer for our women’s walking group with wellness coach, Angelica Rogers. Meet other like-minded ladies looking to engage in health and wellness activities and gain support in living a healthy lifestyle.

The group will meet at the library on the first Saturday of every month and kick off at 9:30am. Together we will walk a generous loop around the city, getting to know one another, exchanging stories and gaining friendship in the community. As we circle back to our beginning point, we’ll stop by the farmer’s market where you’ll be able to pick up fresh produce, swap recipe ideas, and feel inspired for your week ahead. Children are welcome to come along.

KINDERHOOK, N.Y. – Martin Van Buren National Historic Site will host “Spring in the Orchard," an opportunity to visit and learn about spring happenings in the recently restored historic orchard, including the installation of two native wildflower plots, on Saturday, June 7. Special tours led by Kyle Bradford and Anna Duhon of the Farmscape Ecology Program will take place at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m.

Tours will highlight the two native wildflower installations, made possible by an Ecological Restoration Grant from the Partners for Climate Action, which was awarded to the Friends of Lindenwald. The grant enabled biologists to seed and plant a large native wildflower plot along the orchard fence. Biologists also seeded and planted an experimental sandy plot garden with the types of sand-frequenting plant species that may have populated Kinderhook when Martin Van Buren was growing up here and the area still had pine barrens.

Visitors will learn how Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program biologists selected what species they planted. The program is also collaborating with the park orchardist and park staff to monitor the ecology of the organically-managed orchard, including the impact on pollinators and other insects.

Visitors will also learn what historical records tell us when apple and pear trees flowering in Kinderhook in the 1830s and 1840s and how this compares to current observations. Participants may observe the orchard’s newly planted apple and pear trees up close. These will soon be part of the “phenology trail” at Lindenwald where, since 2021, park staff have monitored the timing of flowering, leafing, fruiting and other life cycle events (phenology) for 10 different species of trees and shrubs as part of the USA National Phenology Network.

Tour leaders Anna Duhon and Kyle Bradford of the Farmscape Ecology Program, have collaborated with staff at Martin Van Buren National Historic Site for many years to create the phenology trail and to monitor it in the long term. Kyle also brings a particular knowledge and interest in sand barren ecology.

Tours will depart from the Visitor’s Center at 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Interested visitors can sign up for a tour at the Visitor Center.
