Jeffrey Silverstein is a songwriter living in Portland, Oregon. You Become The Mountain (2020), his debut LP was described as 'cosmic country with a gentle sweetness' by NPR and drew comparisons to Bill Frisell/David Berman. In April of 2021 Silverstein released Torii Gates, a new EP of psych-folk songs celebrating the unknown, small joys, and learning to be comfortable with transition. It features the pedal-steel work of Barry Walker Jr (Mouth Painter/North Americans/Rose City Band), Alex Chapman (Parson Red Heads) on bass and production from Ryan Oxford (Y La Bamba, Matt Dorrien, etc.). ----------------------- Dylan Nowik, of Steady Sun, and vocalist Liza Ibarra began Camp Saint Helene shortly after moving to the Catskill Mountains. Their studio, where they did most of their writing, is located on the site of a former Christian summer camp-turned-arts-colony, which has informed much of their artistic process. Their sound lies somewhere within a shimmer of hope and a hint of doom. Nowik and Ibarra teamed up with Alex P. Wernquest (drums) and Wesley Harper (bass and keys), to record their first album to 8-track, ½” tape, at Basement Floods Records in Catskill, New York. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will hold a virtual public information meeting to discuss improvements to the Hudson Boat Launch. The meeting will be held online via WebEx. During the meeting, OPRHP staff will provide a brief overview of the project design, followed by an open question and answer session. Blending elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian “ethno-chaos” band DakhaBrakha—a quartet from Kyiv—creates a world of unexpected new music. Their name, “DakhaBrakha,” means “give/take” in Old Ukrainian, and reflects their resilience and philosophy. Having experimented with Ukrainian folk music, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world to create the unique and original style that has become their hallmark. At PS21, DakhaBrakha will perform their original live accompaniment to Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s “Earth,” the 1930 Ukrainian silent film. “The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR Ukrainian cinema begins with “Earth.” Dovzhenko, one of the pillars of the Soviet cinematic avant-garde alongside Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Dziga Vertov, dramatizes the collectivization of the farms owned by the Ukrainian peasantry. Dovzhenko personally denounced this Stalinist policy for its violence and the seizure of peasant property, but he used collectivization as a narrative device to frame a series of vignettes of Ukrainian village life.

The green murmuring of dreams has long echoed through Miles Hewitt’s work, whether in poetry or song. After years leading Boston art-rock collective The Solars, whose EP Retitled Remastered landed on DigBoston’s Best Massachusetts Albums of 2017, Hewitt returned to Harvard College to finish his award-winning collection of poems “The Candle is Forever Learning to Sing.” In 2018, Hewitt made for the sylvan Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts, settling in a small hilltown just down the road from a friend’s recording studio and a few miles from where he’d spent his first year of life. It was there, amidst the cycling greens, browns, and blues, that the songs that would become Hewitt’s debut solo album, Heartfall, emerged. Drawing on British and American folk music, ‘70s songwriter rock, psychedelia, krautrock, and electronic music, Heartfall seeks what the late critic Ian MacDonald called “the chime.” It’s an album for album-lovers, redolent with longing and mystery, magic and dread, wielding the poet’s eye for enchantment, the musician’s ear for the unsayable, and the mystic’s heart of gold. “Blow wind, blow rain / blow it all away,” Hewitt pleas on the haunting “Love Comes to Those Who Ask.” “I know you know how, just give me any other shape.” This is music on an elemental scale — cycles and wheels, warped and misused, recur, as do fires, rain, heavenly bodies, spirits, and dreams — with Hewitt’s unmistakable silvery voice smiling near the center. LISTEN —————————————- Polymath percussionist Thor Harris inaugurated “Thor & Friends” in the autumn of 2015 after five years of touring as the percussionist of iconic avant-rock ensemble Swans. The project is intended as a vehicle for experimentation with the conceptual vocabulary of American Minimalism collaborating with a rotating cast of Austin-based musicians. A crafter of musical instruments and stylistic polyglot Harris is returning home with Thor & Friends and the resultant music is an elongated greeting and ode to his community, woodworking shop and the instruments his hands shape and bring to life.

Dr. Gary Lelonek, author of "The Jewish History of Tannersville, New York," will lead us through the development of the Jewish community in Tannersville. Beginning in the early 1900's when "Tannersville was the vacation home to Jewish leaders and sports legends as well as the setting for Jewish organizational meetings pivotal to the development in America and Israel." Through the 20th century as the village became a hub for learning and spiritualty. And today there is still a "thriving Jewish Summer community." Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Kyle Morgan grew up in central Pennsylvania, where he spent countless Sunday mornings amidst the broken strains and coffee breath of his church congregation. His first record, Starcrossed Losers, became the alias under which he would go on to release two more, Bind Us Anew and Strange Hesitations, each featuring his distinctive conglomeration of Americana styles, from stripped-down acoustic ballads and love-lorn parlor laments to roaring alt-country and throwback 60’s rock’n’roll.
Released in February by Team Love Records, Younger At Most Everything is a collection of deeply personal songs that reads like a map of Morgan’s spiritual evolution. From child of evangelical Christianity to existentially paralyzed adolescent, drunken romantic to neurotic but industrious artist, Younger takes listeners on a bumpy journey through the badlands of self-doubt, fear, repression, and near-despair, charting the ongoing, non-linear path towards healing. The first single, “Do You Still Have Some Fight In You,” came out last fall.

My father has been a professional storyteller and children’s performer, my mother his manager. So the question as a kid was always where is the storyline here, who’s that speaking with the accent anyway and what are they carrying over the hill in that large black bag of theirs? My work seems to have preferred hard-to-come-by places over the years—underpopulated bars in Berlin Germany, street corners, defunct blogs, one time the Princeton University Graduate Center on a Tuesday night, yikes. I’m not at all sure how you came across this website, but however you did, you’re very welcome.
