Michael Gordon’s Field of Vision is a large-scale, site-responsive work adapted to PS21’s rolling landscape. Doug Perkins directs 36 percussionists playing specially constructed and tuned instruments composed of industrial metals, recycled materials, wood, and gongs. The large number of percussionists and the vast playing field highlights the perspective and the architectural movement of sound. In Field of Vision, sound is never a flat line; it takes on multiple roles in space and time, inducing a quasi-meditative, almost ecstatic state in both the audience and the performers. Bring a chair or blanket.

Art Omi presents an immersive installation by artist Portia Munson in the Newmark Gallery, on view from June 25 through September 25. For over two decades, Munson has teased out cultural codes latent in the mass-produced items that surround us. Her monochromatic installations underscore the pleasures of looking at a dizzying array of items that are at once seductive and utterly disposable. Munson’s work offers an incisive study of the desires and terrors lurking just under the surface of commodities.

Israel’s Vertigo Dance Company brings its vision of sustainability to PS21’s 100-acre campus with “One. One & One,” choreographed by Noa Wertheim and set to an original score for strings and vocals by Avi Belleli. Performed by ten dancers on a soil-covered floor, “One. One & One” reflects individuals’ desire for wholeness and spiritual connection to the natural world. The number “one” suggests solitude but also unity, and the work expresses the human tension between the competing desires for independence and connection—“the individual and his or her tribe” (Financial Times).
“In the last few decades, some wonderful dance artists have established an important place in Israel’s cultural landscape, and Vertigo Dance Company is among them. Vertigo’s excellent dancers express a distinctive voice through an impressive movement quality—visceral and raw, but with a surprising, acute sensitivity.” — Mikhail Baryshnikov

Chris Layman from Fox Farm Apiary leads a discussion on pollinators, bee nutrition, and the plants that support them. Topics will include the life of the honeybee, current local ecology and the habitats within for wild bees. Following this conversation, Layman leads a walk around the property and identifies some native bees on his favorite plants. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the irreplaceable role that pollinators play in our ecosystems and lives. Members can register by emailing Art Omi at tours@artomi.org or by calling (518) 392-4747.

In the upstairs lounge; no cover, pass the hat. Bobby Previte pulls a monstrous sextet through some of the iconic music from the Hard Bop 60s, the Loft Jazz 70s, the Free Music 80s, the "Downtown" 90s, and beyond. Featuring an absolutely crushing band: John Esposito, piano, Keith Pray, saxophones, Joe Fieldler, trombone, Nick Edwards, bass, and Dylan Canterbury, trumpet. Every Sunday will be in an "open rehearsal" format, so from time to time you might hear them, start, stop, fix, edit, or do those things musicians do to "get ready" for you, the audience.
