Catskill Cabin Getaway: John Welsh (Audio)

Sep 15, 2022
Produced by Michael Porter and Andrew Reid.

Guest John Welsh is married with three children. He left school wanting to be a journalist, footballer, or musician; however, he was not good enough at football and could not play an instrument. Further, he did not have the qualifications for a journalism university course and drifted into banking and has been there ever since. Author and musician George Paterson recently described Welsh as “Scotland’s hardest gigging man.” Just before the COVID-19 pandemic closed the world down, Welsh appeared in a music video, with Paterson, for the song Five Up High by the soul/funk band James Brown Is Annie (think of the video for Beastie Boys Sabotage, but shot in Leith, Scotland). Welsh says he has loads of stories in his head and many musical and literary reviews to do, but he just does not have enough time (at the moment) to do them all. Welsh has written for in-house work magazines and others, such as Vive Le Rock, a major U.K. music magazine that focuses on the genres of punk, new wave, and rock and roll. He has also written for Razur Cuts, a Scotland-based street literature magazine. More recently, Welsh has written roughly 100 articles for Into Creative, a Scotland-based culture website that focuses on music, art, theatre, film, books, and literature. His contributions to date focus mainly on gig reviews, new music releases, book reviews, and conducting interviews with authors and musicians.

On each show, invited guests are asked to discuss a number of items that they would take with them to their Catskill Cabin getaway. As Mike and Andy discuss their chosen items, it is intended that you, the listener, will enjoy getting to know each guest a little bit better. This WGXC podcast is subscribable. An excerpt of this show airs later in the day at 6 p.m. on "All Together Now!," and then later in the week on the "WGXC Morning Show" and the "WGXC Early Morning Show." Before March 2021, the show was called "Catskill Cabin Conversations."
