For the first day of spring we will look at the radio news headlines, plus some of the radio-related workshops and panel discussions at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, last weekend. The show will also track the reaction, after the weekend when "This American Life" announced they were retracting an episode with monologist Mike Daisey. who made up facts in his story on the radio show. Plus, we will debut new transmission art from Dichroics, a Brooklyn-based band that includes former The Dust Dive frontman Bryan Zimmerman and his radio samples, and Darin Mickey on theremin. A dichroic filter, thin-film filter, or interference filter is a very accurate color filter used to selectively pass light of a small range of colors while reflecting other colors. Used before a light source, a dichroic filter produces light that is perceived by humans to be highly saturated (intense) in color.

Tune in to the program, 'Human Machine' this Saturday at 3pm and pledge support for the show and the station that brings it to you each week: WGXC of course! This week's episode features Harun Farocki's War At A Distance: The automation of factory production is paralleled with the automation of destruction in warfare, and a new world of machine images is revealed – images not intended for human eyes, but for the visual tracking systems of the digital age. In this work, Farocki traces the history of missile guidance systems from WWII through the present day using visual artifacts of machine guidance systems, as well as training films, missile footage from the Gulf War, and flight and battle simulations. A coolly terrifying glimpse of the future.

Organized in partnership with Acra-based nonprofit arts organization free103point9, Transmittal, offers Greene County residents and visitors a window into Transmission Arts. Transmittal is curated by Galen Joseph-Hunter, free103point9’s Executive Director and author of Transmission Arts: Artists and Airwaves (PAJ Publications: 2011.) The exhibition features an international and local roster of artists and organizations whose work celebrates the interdisciplinary nature of Transmission Arts and is made manifest in video, sound, radio, installation, performance, and work-on-paper. Please join us for an opening celebrating Transmittal on Saturday, April 28. 5-7 p.m.

In A Noospheric Atlas of New York, Brett Ian Balogh (Chicago, IL) maps the hertzian space created by the New York's mass media broadcast stations. This space is not definable in the traditional terms of the surveyed boundaries of state territories, but rather by electrical field strengths and consumer markets. Geospatial data provided by the Federal Communications Commission is rendered as translucent shapes whose color is determined by the type of service (AM/FM/TV).

With RELAY, Max Goldfarb (Hudson, NY) presents a grouping of Ambulant Transceivers, a series of handmade radio transceivers constructed from reconstituted radio-electronic components, housed inside vintage first-aid tins. The adjacent video, Locations:Relay, represents an equally hand-made security system in the form of a community-watch perimeter check. The localized security network is cobbled together by many collaborating members of an unspecified village: each voice transmission attached to aerial imagery of the territory.

Sam Sebren (Athens, NY) presents 9/11-QVC, an off-air single-channel video work. On the 10th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York City, Sebren videotaped himself toggling his television dial between news coverage in memorial of the attacks and a home shopping network’s regularly scheduled programming. Here Sebren “performs” with a palette of commercial television broadcast re-presenting these transmissions in a critical and reflective light.

Fill, by Maria Papadomanolaki (New York, NY) is an interactive sound installation using low-power radio transmission. To experience Fill, attendees will borrow a small radio transceiver and move about the space. Papadomanolaki’s microcast is designed to highlight the physical properties of her site-specific transmission. Gallery goers will observe distinct changes in what they hear based on their position and movement in the GCCA exhibition space.

Phillip Stearns (Brooklyn, NY) presents his work Deluge, a sound and light installation that depicts the white noise of unoccupied radio frequencies as a showering rain of light. As digital technologies become more adept at reducing interference and noise through omission and censorship, we are quickly losing touch with unmediated white noise, that static hush in between the stations, and playground for the imagination. Many antenna like structures, LED strands are clustered together, each representing the activity of the broadband white noise being picked up by simple transistor receivers. From these discrete elements, a cloud of lights is formed, filling the space with a form activated by the absence of pre-determined content. The sculpture plays on the poetics hidden within the language of both analog and digital electronics.

Presented as listening stations, Transmittal also includes special selections from two recent international radio art exhibitions: Radio Arts Space by radioCona (Ljubljana, Slovenia), and Radio Boredcast co-commissioned by AV Festival 12 and Pixel Palace, hosted by basic.fm (Newcastle, UK).

GCCA exhibition programs are made possible, in part, by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.

Transmittal will be on view at the Greene County Council for the Arts Gallery 398 Main Street, Catskill, NY 12414 April 28 – June 2, 2012. In conjunction with the exhibition, A Build Your Own Radio Synthesizer Workshop will take place on Saturday June 2, 2012. Please note that enrollment is limited, and pre-registration is required.

In conjunction with the exhibition Transmittal WGXC 90.7-FM is pleased to present this special series broadcasting at 1 a.m. for seven consecutive nights. Radio Arts Space gives the public insight into the wide range of artistic approaches in the field of Radio and Sound Art. The selected works rely on the culture and experience of listening. The demand for listening is what distinguishes these works and stimulates us to rethink current exhibiting strategies and spaces where we do listen.

A project of radioCona, Radio Arts Space premiered December 2011 at the ŠKUC Gallery in Ljubljana, on 88.8-FM Ljubljana, Slovenia, and online at radioCona.si. Invited curators were asked to put together a selection of works, either culling from the submissions to the radioCona open call and/or by choosing artists on their own. All together the project consists from 46 artworks, exhibited by 42 artists from 22 countries and more than 21 of listening hours. Radio Arts Space combines seven independent curatorial perspectives:

April 29: Tevž Logar (Slovenia): Endeavours of sound (duration: 03:16:23 w/station IDs)
April 30: Maria Papadomanolaki (United States): Radio Mirror (duration: 01:27:44 w/station IDs)
May 1: Milica Pekić (Serbia): Is there such a thing as “dead air”? (duration: 03:10:10 w/station IDs)
May 2: Manja Ristić (Serbia) (duration: 03:50:32 w/station IDs)
May 3: Robert Sakrowski (Germany): curatingyoutube.net - An Acoustic Journey Through YouTube (duration: 01:24:45 w/station IDs)
May 4: Ilari Valbonesi (Italy): ULTRA DISCO (duration: 04:03:10 w/station IDs)
May 5: Brane Zorman (Slovenia): TAG (duration: 03:17:42 w/station IDs)

The full Radio Arts Space program in Ljubljana included discussions, presentations, performances, and workshops. Subsequent presentations of Radio Arts Space include Nachtradiofestival Radio Arts Space broadcast on Freies Radio in Berlin on 88.4-FM and Potsdam on 90.7-FM with Freies Radio Potsdam, CoLaboRadio, Studio Ansage and Piradio; Berlin, Germany (February 2012) and on Kunstradio at ORF; Vienna, Austria (April 1 2012).

Radio Arts Space was created by Irena Pivka and Brane Zorman, and produced by Jasmina Založnik at the CONA Institute for Contemporary Arts Processing, 2011.
