In this second Radio Lab workshop with students in Julianne Swartz's sculpture class, students will be presenting kinetic and performative objects that they've created following a Radio Lab and tour of free103point9 Wave Farm on October 16, 2007.

The student presentations will be streamed live on free103point9 Online Radio.

An evening composed of three pieces that have nothing in common ... 1: "music" and music video, based on what Madonna (Madonna Louise Ciccone) thinks it is (or a respirator sounds like); 2: A vinyl based topographic scratch around the world on behalf of the one and only TWV - the black beeliner with grooves - and 3: HCAT-MPIGS a piece for trombone, violin and annoying light; at the end of a questionable evening, questions can be asked and products can be bought at discount prices; the concert supported by the Ministerpresident of North-Rhine Westphalia and Harvestworks; with contributions by Dan Evans Farkas, Phill Niblock and Yasunao Tone.

So what's new?- well, some things, but with six hours of music and film/video, who can tell?; 6pm until 12am of the longest night of the year.

Electro-acoustic duo Latitude/Longitude release their new 7" single "Solar Filters/Mother Evening" (free103point9 Audio Dispatch 031) at Zebulon with Zeke Healey, Brian Osborne, and other performers. Streamed live through Zebulon's web site (http://www.zebuloncafeconcert.com/) and relayed on free103point9 Online Radio. Two new songs from electro-acoustic duo Latitude/Longitude (Michael Garofalo and Patrick McCarthy) are out now as part of free103point9’s Audio Dispatch Series.
On the A-Side, Solar Filters, banjo and tenor guitar introduce the melody, which is picked up and echoed throughout by melodica. McCarthy’s mystic-cowboy vocals are sung through a contactmic’d banjo head, the strings, tuned to the notes of the song’s minimalist melody, resonating with each syllable. A stomping drum loop drives the song towards its climax of analog synthesizers and shortwave radio static (not sampled, but recorded as a performance, by tuning a radio while wandering around the studio).
The more textural B-side, Mother Evening, features “found” lyrics taken from various random-text, spam emails. Pedal steel guitar creates a swarmof- insects anxiety while prepared electric guitar weaves in and out of the vocal line and thumping floor tom.
Michael Garofalo and Patrick McCarthy began performing as Latitude/Longitude in 2004. They work with diverse sonic materials: test oscillators, homemade cassette tape and field recordings, radio transmissions (FM/AM/SW/CB), and toy electronics (broken and functional), as well as more traditional instruments, such as pedal steel guitar, banjo, mbira, and voice. In 2005 Latitude/Longitude released their selftitled debut album on their own imprint, Early Thieves. Absolute Locations, a full-length collection of improvisations from live recordings, will be released in a limited edition in 2008.

Maybe you want to expand the sonic capabilities of that old Casio keyboard or maybe you want to make that Furby sound like it's screeching from the bowels of hell. Have you ever thought about tweaking out an iPod for broadcasting signals? In either case, circuit bending is a great way to get into electronics without knowing anything about it. In this workshop, lead by artist and teacher Jeff Thompson, you'll learn how to safely hack apart and bend cheap electronic toys and instruments, different ways to trigger the effects you discover, and some basics electronics that will be helpful in the process. You'll also learn how to add audio-out jacks run into your mixer or amp, reset switches, and answer any questions you may have. No tools or toys needed - just bring something to take notes.

All-day Free Media Workshop on February 16, which focuses on the use of “free-cycled” materials to create new and innovative forms of public infrastructure. Eyebeam and MediaShed participants, together with workshop participants, will present their projects and discuss the idea and application of “free media”. The event will close with public reception celebrating the exchange. Jamie Allen and Tianna Kennedy will hack cheap and accessible radio transmitters to mp3players to use in public space. February 16, 2008 1:00 PM - 6:30 PM 540 W. 21st St. Eyebeam and the UK’s MediaShed a free-media community center in Southend by the Sea, have been working closely on the development of Gearbox, an open-source, online media-making toolkit. On February 2, Eyebeam's Student Residents, Senior Fellows and staff will travel to Southend by the Sea for six days o meet, share practices, and develop collaborative projects using Gearbox. MediaShed youth will travel to NYC on February 12 complete the projects and install them in Eyebeam’s galleries. This exchange will culminate in an all-day Free Media Workshop on February 16, which will focus on the use of “free-cycled” materials to create new and innovative forms of public infrastructure. Eyebeam and MediaShed participants, together with workshop participants, will present their projects and discuss the idea and application of “free media”. The event will close with public reception celebrating the exchange.
