Join Damian Catera and Jeff Thompson for an evening of new performance works for real sound. This performance event coincides with the current show "Into The Air," an exhibition of sculpture and works on paper by Alfonso Cantú and Todd Rosenbaum. Catera, who recently performed in the "Unauthorized Access" exhibit for the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia will debut two new improvised works for radio and guitar. Thompson, who is making his Brooklyn debut, will weave alluring live soundscapes with found and prepared objects.

Hogar Collection Gallery is pleased to present ¨Into the Air¨, March 17 – May 1, 2006, an exhibition of sculpture and works on paper by Alfonso Cantú and Todd Rosenbaum, with an opening reception on Saturday, March 18 from 6-9 pm. The works in the exhibition find a commonality in their depicitons of the sky, clouds, objects spinning out of control, explosions, metaphors of creation and destruction, as well the stories they tell of ephemerality and exisitence. They seem to travel into the fragile space where things verge on being out of control yet exist in a space of complete harmony.

Alfonso Cantú’s work is a process of reconfiguring and transforming the history, design, function, and value of the objects and materials around us in everyday life. The forms he creates oscillate between the symbolic/functional significance of what the original object is and the alternate meanings that can be produced by the cultural / art historical context that contain their design. His interest is to enhance and expose the underlying elements of states of temporality that exist within architectural elements, domestic objects and materials. In essence, how their representation and recontextualization resonates in our experience of the space they / we inhabit. Cantú will be showing large color pencil drawings on paper that depict pedestal fans spinning out of control in the sky as if in a catastrophic situation that is in it’s final moments of existence and is getting ready to wisp away, like the clouds that it agitates. He will also be showing new sculptures using fans as an inspiration. He has recently participated in the Bronx Museum - Artists In the Marketplace program, was awarded a NYFA grant for sculpture and received his MFA from Rutgers University and a MA at Goldsmiths College in London.

Todd Rosenbaum’s work engages tragedy, comedy, harmony, creation, destruction and the fragility of existence. Using depictions of skyscapes that are filled with clouds and explosions either at the precise moment of night’s change to day, or at the center of the vacuum of deep space at the instant of the beginning of “time”. They are subversive scenes in that it is uncertain if they are violent or serene. Clouds at times are either hiding what we “think” is happening on the other side, or they could be the effect of tremendous explosions. Explosions that pose a question that is either subversively “political” in the idea that they evoke war and destruction or they can be seen as subversively “religious” in that they speak of the creation of the grand cosmos. The true explanation is not revealed, leaving the question as mysterious or sublime as the experience we witness. Rosenbaum will be showing comic book-like gouache paintings on paper as well as, steel and cotton mobiles, ” floating cloud masses”, that flutter in the air”. He is the co-director of Hogar Collection Gallery and also received his MFA from Rutgers University.

Kathy Kennedy’s Sonic Choreographies are multi-track pieces for 5.1 surround sound composed almost entirely of the composer's voice, creating an immersive and deeply personal environment. Kennedy will also improvise live over some of the soundscapes. From lilting melodies to haunting auralities, the concert hall is transformed into a space within the human voice.

Surge is an online exhibition of web-based projects selected from an open call for submissions. Surge includes works by artists 31 Down, Abe Linkoln and Marisa Olson, Angel Nevarez and Alex Rivera, NYSAE (New York Society for Acoustic Ecology), Jimpunk, and Leslie Sharpe. The featured projects employ new media tools to both conceptually and formally address different possibilities for transmission art online. Some consider the nature of signals as they move through the ether; others appropriate forms of wireless transmission, such as the military’s aerial ‘drone’ or the programming language AsCii, to propose new kinds of digital communication. Surge is co-presented by free103point9 and Rhizome.

Microradio Sound Walk is a experimental media art event and walking tour of Buffalo’s airwaves utilizing transmission tools to create a soundscape that responds to both the architecture and sonic phenomena of the space surrounding Hallwalls.

Microradio Sound Walk consists of three transmission stations–“Local Frequencies,” “Environmental Nature,” and “Social Spaces” –situated along a loosely defined route inside the new Hallwalls space at the former Asbury Delaware Church and branching out throughout the immediate neighborhood. Participants who encounter radios or are lent radios with headphones proceed through the route in the order of their choosing, as they move farther away from one station and grow closer to the next, the signal they receive too will shift. This sonic progression maps the spatial qualities of the airwaves and provides a tangible example of their ubiquitousness.

Three artists, 31 Down, Matt Bua, and Radio Ruido, are placed roughly equidistant from one and other. Each will microcast his signal on the same FM frequency. As visitors take the Microradio Sound Walk the three signals fade in and out depending on the listeners’ movement.

31 Down's station will be focused on the local airwaves themselves. Using radios, wireless microphones, cell phones, walkie-talkies and scanners as well as locating Bluetooth and WIFI signals, this "Local Frequency" station will feature works that make use of the local airwaves by sampling and 'playing' them back.

Formed in 2001 by Ryan Holsopple, 31 Down is a radio-transmission based theater company from Brooklyn, New York. The vision of the company lies in the hybridization of modern technologies with older technologies, systems, established genres, and forms. The theater company uses radio transmissions, wireless devices, and home security technology to expand and contract traditional theatrical spaces.

Recent projects include: wwwSomnambulator as part of Surge, an online transmission exhibition presented by Rhizome and free103point9; Wanderlost as part of Airborne, presented by free103point9 and The New Museum for Contemporary Art, Spring, 2005.

Environmental Nature – Matt Bua

In Environmental Nature, Matt Bua will use contact microphones to wire the Hallwalls environment. Some microphones will be easily spotted while others will be concealed. The signals activated by the audience will produce one element of this sound walk montage.

Matt Bua makes drawings, films, videos, installations, and performance art pieces. Bua’s “Suitcase Orchestra” is a self-contained, partly/fully automated sound creator, which uses precariously prepared instruments, animal talk, electronics, and motors. His frequent collaborations with Jesse Bercowetz take form in large-scale fantastical, sometimes aggressive, spaces that redefine and re-imagine found objects as functional elements in architecture.

Bua has shown work internationally at exhibition and public spaces including: the University Museum at Albany, New York; Grizedale Arts, Cumbria, England; Art Omi, New York; Cambridge Art Council Gallery, Massachusetts; and Feigen Contemporary, Masiimo Audiello, Brooklyn Museum, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, Derek Eller Gallery, Governor's Island, and Jessica Murray Projects in New York City.

Social Spaces – Radio Ruido

Performed by Radio Ruido, the third and final FM station concentrates on Social Spaces in order to highlight the discursive properties of radio. This will include site-specific works that explore a phenomenological approach to the 'sound walk,' or work which focus on physicality of the performance area, local histories, idiosyncratic voices, audience interaction/play, and storytelling.

Radio Ruido encompasses radio projects initiated by artist Tom Mulligan. Working both solo and in collaboration, these projects entail both composed installations as well as various improvised live sound situations. Often site-specific in content, they seek to challenge conventional concepts of radio as well as exploring and challenging the physicality of the performance space.

He is currently hosting Triangulation, a weekly Online Radio show Tuesdays live from the free103point9 Project Space in Brooklyn, New York. The ongoing focus has been presenting a live forum for experimental sound cultures.

Radio Ruido has performed live with the audio-visual collective Dimmer and designed sound for Teatro Chinampa. He has recently exhibited at Deitch Projects, White Box, and Participant, Inc., in New York; at the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore; and the Center for Contemporary Art Ujadowski Castle in Warsaw, Poland.

For thirty years, the Greene County Council on the Arts has brought the arts to our community! Celebrate GCCA’s 30th Anniversary at a Members Musical Picnic Party on Saturday, 12-5 p.m. (rain or shine) on the idyllic setting of free103point9 Wave Farm’s lush grounds of rolling meadows, ponds, and walking paths through mature pine forests surrounded by majestic mountain vistas. Artists, writers and musicians are welcome to join the party at Wave Farm situated in the beautiful foothills of the Catskill Mountains in Acra, New York for this eventful gathering of informal fun. All are encouraged to share a musical or other artistic talent in the form of a song, artwork, creative reading, or anything to make the day more memorable. Born in 1964 in Tokyo. Started playing guitar when 13 years old. After some influences from Folk, Rock and Blues, started playing Improvisation in 1981. Founded three piece improv band "Madhar" in 1987. Besides this, has been members of many other units like "Mongoose", "Bject", "Nijiumu" "Amephone", "Hikyo String Quartet" and recently "Satanic Abandoned Rock'n'Roll Society". After releasing the first solo album "Relator"(slub music, 2001), in which used an acoustic guitar with a mixture feeling of country blues and free improv, plays solo more than ever in styles of both acoustic and electric guitars, turntable without records, etc. Using a prepared resonator guitar with a Samurai sword, released the second solo "Resophonie"(a bruit secret, 2002) which can be described as sonic sculpture only by the guitar. In 2003, third solo "Don't Forget to Boogie!" (idea records) was released. Tribute to the instrument, playing in minimal one chord Boogie/Rock/Blues guitar style with a vintage electric guitar tone. In the same year, made a collaboration work with a Japanese young painter, Yoko Naito, contributing tape-delayed electric guitar music for her wood block paintings. A document live album from 2005, "Route 13 to the Gates of Hell: Live in Tokyo" (headz) was selected in the 50 albums of the year by the Wire magazine. Recently, started releasing "official bootleg series" from labels like Esquilo (Portugal)and Utech Records (Milwaukee). Beside these, has played and recorded with many musicians in and outside of Japan and has released a lot of albums. Recently touring around U.S.A., Europe and down under to collaborate with local musicians as well as as a solo Artist to show up to festivals like "What is Music?" (Australia, 2002), Alt Music (New Zealand, 2002 & 2004), Amplify (Tokyo, 2002 & New York, 2003), Musique Action (France, 2003 & 2005), Musiques Innovatrices (France, 2003), Uchiage (Berlin & Vienna, 2004) and Klangspuren (Innsbruck 2005) and Instal (Scotland, 2005).

The program highlights the DIY, collaborative spirit that this city has grown famous for, featuring an ecclectic selection of work ranging from Cat Solen¹s music video for Bright Eyes to Vladimir¹s handmade viewmaster movies; from Vanessa Renwick¹s collaboration with Portland musician Tara Jane O¹Neil to Shawna Ferreira¹s psychedelic video creations. Stumptown Girls promises to be a night chock full of surprises, inspiration, and good old northwestern spunk! After the films, solo guitarist Random Cutting will play a live show on the boat.
