Meant to Ferment: Ferment as Revolt (Audio)

Dec 01, 2025

In this show, we explore the intersections of fermentation with revolt, rebellion and transformation. Mold, yeast and bacteria will be the thread as we experience different points of historical contact between fermentation and collective revolution through songs, poems, sound art excerpts, and audio recordings.

We also have a special excerpt from Umi Fangyu Hsu, who is a trans nonbinary sound artist and ethnomusicologist, titled How to Grow a Movement, which Umi describes as, “a work-in-progress audio ethnography about Critical Yeast. Based on participant observations of the more than human world through baking and fermentation experiments, this sound work investigates the quiet rising and multigenerational thinking behind social movements.”

This show is a reflection on the potential for transformation as guided by the powerful and potent energies of fermentation.
