Overlooked: More Newly Released Music (not Jazz) (Audio)

Jun 08, 2021

After the local news at noon, some offbeat, soon-to-be-not-overlooked non-jazz. Like most Overlooked new releases shows, there will be many different sonic palettes in this broadcast: vocally driven and instrument laden, soft and hard, sharp, precise compositions, and lazy, layered palimpsests of musical residue, naturally found sounds and deft production techniques. Everything is brand new except for one recording from Japan in 1903 and another from 1887 composed by a person born into slavery. Featured music: Arooj Aftab; Jen Shyu; Mike Polizze; Nick Hakim and Roy Nathanson; Jeffrey Silverstein; Daniel Bachman; Hailu Mergia; John Davis plays Blind Tom Wiggins; studio recordings of Julius Eastman's work (Wild Up); Nashville Ambient Ensemble; gagaku from 1903; tUnE yArDs; Samba Toure; Sunny Jain; Dry Cleaning; The AntiKaroshi; Odd Circus; Six Organs of Admittance; and (time permitting) Darsombra.

“Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
