Music for the Masses: Diwali, Festival of Lights (Audio)
Featuring a wall-to-wall mix of South Asian popular music known as Bhangra, we invite you to celebrate Diwali (aka Deepavali) – the five-day Festival of Lights observed by Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains around the world. With its roots in India's early agrarian society, Diwali falls on the day of a new moon and coincides with the last harvest before winter, symbolizing new beginnings and the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. Bhangra originated as a genre of folk dance and music of Punjab, performed during the harvest season, and takes its name from bhang, or hemp – once an important agricultural product of that region.
"Music for the Masses" invites you on an excursion of sound and rhythm. Discover the music of established and emerging artists, both signed and unsigned, on the international music scene. For the avid globe-hopper and armchair traveler alike. You might want to pack a map and a sandwich. Catskill resident "DJ Neva" is an ethnomusicologist, producer, and long-time cultural activist, specializing in music from the entire African continent, as well as the Caribbean and Latin America, the Maghreb and Middle East, and the Roma (Gypsy) diaspora.
