Overlooked: Metal Jazz (Audio)

Sep 25, 2019
In this rebroadcast from Sept. 24, 2019, host Rob Saffer aims to showcase some ways jazz musicians have been influenced by heavy metal and how some early jazz experimenters helped expand a sonic palette often favored by heavy metal musicians. Not a style or movement, "metal jazz" as a concept is as challenging as it is vague. Some artists profiled include: Matt Mitchell, Sonny Sharrock, Dan Weiss, Cuong Vu, Kris Davis, Miles Davis, Tomas Fujiwara, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane, John Zorn and many others. This will not be for the faint of heart. Or faint of ears.

“Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational music and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Broadcast live from the Hudson studio.
