On March 8 the world celebrates International Women’s Day. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week. In 1987, Congress passed legislation designating the entire month of March as National Women's History Month. Nuestra Música will be celebrating National Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on Tuesday March 12, 19, and 26 with women singers and songwriters from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and Cape Verde.
The voices of Mercedes Sosa, Lila Downs, Celia Cruz, Amparo Ochoa, Cecila Todd, Chabuca Granda, Maria Elena Walsh, Leda Valladares, Violeta Parra, Niña Pastori, Soledad Pastoruti, Vocal Vidas, among many others, will fill the air on WGXC 90.7 We will also include “Entre Mujeres” a trans local music composition project between Chicanas/Latinas in the US. and Jarochas/Mexican female musicians in Mexico. This project seeks to make voices, ideas, and trans local dialogues between Chicanas and Jarochas visible through the medium of song.
“Nuestra Música,” “Our Music,” presents the rhythms and folklore of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Cape Verde. From Tango to Flamenco and all Latinx music in between. The show explores the native instruments, languages and traditions played in 22 countries and one territory. Other than Spanish and Portuguese, Nuestra Música presents songs in Quechua, Mapuche, Guaraní, Nahuatl, Gallego, Spanish Basque, and Catalán. Among many styles we present: Tango, Chacarera, Baguala, Zamba with a Z and Samba with and S, Bossa Nova, Cumbia, Llanero, Vallenato, Merengue, Parrandera, Son, Bolero, Ranchera, Corrido, Marimba, Fado, Flamenco, Sevillanas, Jota, Blues, Jazz, Danzon, Mambo and many more.
