Overlooked: Thread, Cellos, Artifacts (Audio)

Dec 14, 2021

Cello can closely approximate human voice, making it approachable and beloved. This broadcast will celebrate the cello in myriad settings and forms, as well as in several compositions from two recent recordings that employ it in both composed and improvised sections: Henry Threadgill’s "Poof," featuring cellist Christopher Hoffman and Artifacts Trio’s "…and then there’s this," featuring Tomeka Reid. Plus, other creative cellists playing both composed and improvised parts in newly recorded avant-garde classical, chamber post-punk, raga-drenched elegies, in solos and with ensembles, including two different cello octets. Featuring: Henry Threadgill’s Zooid; Michael Gordon; Michael Bisio, Kirk Knuffke, Fred Lonberg-Holm; Musk Ox; Todd Haimovitz; Raphael Weinroth-Browne; Inbal Segev, Viet Cuong; Inbal Segev, Sophia Bass; Hannah Collins, Caroline Shaw; Maya Beiser, Phillip Glass; Peter Gregson; and Artifacts Trio.

After the local news at noon, “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.
