Overlooked: Blue Marc (Audio)

Apr 28, 2021

Rebroadcast from April 27, 2020. After the local news at noon, two hours of healing through radio and music. Personal friend, occasional Overlooked, guest and jazz archivist Marc Epstein recently experienced the passing of his wife Jean. Marc is grieving. Host Rob Saffer asked for input from a few of Marc’s closest friends and together they put together a selection of music that reflects Marc's eclectic and impeccable taste: classic jazz, new jazz, blues, psychedelic rock, and ragas we have shared with each other for decades. We hope it helps raise his spirits and projects some audio light toward him during this dark, blue time. Featuring music by Sun Ra; Pink Floyd; King Crimson; Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous, and Jack DeJohnette; Art Ensemble of Chicago; Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons; Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet; Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie; Charles Mingus; Amiri Baraka; Kahlil El Zabar and David Murray; World Saxophone Quartet; Charles Earland; Tony Williams Lifetime; Grateful Dead; Pink Floyd; Son House; June Tyson; Ran Blake/Jeanne Lee; John Coltrane; Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach; Duke Ellington Orchestra and Mahalia Jackson; and Hariprasad Chaurasia. Overlooked is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation.
