Overlooked: Out is In (Audio)

Jun 27, 2023

After the local news at noon, for certain jazz musicians who recorded from the mid 1950s until 1970, going out — at times way out — was in. Eric Dolphy, Booker Little and Roy Haynes were among those artists, with albums titled "Out There" "Out Front," and "Out of the Afternoon." Their albums and compositions, along with others by Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Jaki Byard, Sun Ra, Gil Evans, and Dizzy Reese, will be showcased in this live broadcast. Interestingly — or confusingly — Dolphy has three separate "Out" recordings and there are two different albums with the same title: "Out Front." “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.
