Tell It Like It Is: Remembering Stonewall (Audio)

Christina Malisoff and Sam Sebren welcome Linda Mussman and Ron Puhalski to "Tell It Like It Is" to recognize 42 years of gay rights and civil rights activism since the historic Stonewall Riots of June 1969 in New York City. First, listeners hear a Pacifica documentary made about the 1979 National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. This recording is followed by a discussion with the guests about the history of the struggle for gay rights and where the struggle is now with the Marriage Bill proposal currently under consideration in the NY state Senate.
Linda Mussmann is the co- director with her partner Claudia Bruce of TSL, Time and Space Limited in Hudson, NY. Mussmann founded TSL in 1973 in NYC. TSL's mission was to create theatre that critiqued the status quo in art and politics. As both community activists and performance artists, Mussmann and Bruce saw the opportunity to use art, advocacy, and open communication to revitalize the community, inspire positive change, and encourage dialogue across divisions of class, color, gender, and ethnicity. Linda Mussmann has worked tirelessly for the arts and for civil rights for over 3 decades.
Ron Puhalski has a history of civil rights & gay rights activism dating before the Stonewall riots which he was also there for, on the streets, on June 27, 1969. Prior to Stonewall he was a founding member of The Kalos Society, a gay activists support group who were the first to use the Lambda symbol of liberty as their icon (which was later adopted by GAA). Also prior to Stonewall, he was a member of GLF, the Gay Liberation Front which the Kalos Society merged into. After Stonewall, Ron joined GAA, the Gay Activist Alliance and marched in the first NYC Gay Pride March in June 1970. Ron joined "Act Up" at it's inception in 1987 and protested in Washington DC and in NYC for AIDS research funding and to destigmatize the disease. Ron, half Polish & half Greek, was a founding member of "Razem", NYC Polish Gays and Lesbians who marched in the 1996 Pulaski Day Parade in NYC, and he was a member at that time of GGAL, Greek Gays and Lesbians, NYC.
