Overlooked: Newly Released Music (Audio)

Mar 28, 2023

This pre-recorded broadcast from Overlook Mountain will feature 19 newly released tracks offering listeners a diverse sample of music being made today. The show will feature: diaspora jazz from London, Capetown, Montreal and Zurich; some less-categorizable jazz; a feature for the ‘Primorski Meh’ (Croatian bagpipe) that’s anything but meh; American, Japanese and Turkish psych; an oddball reissue blending Indian classical and American country music; string quartets by Weinberg, Reich and Perkinson; layered cellos mixed with field recordings; layered solo trombone; and some ambient country if time permits.

After the local news at noon, “Overlooked” is a show focusing on overlooked and under-heard jazz, improvisational, and other fringe music, from early roots to contemporary experiments, a mix of familiar to rare, classic to weird. Live from the shadow of Overlook Mountain in Ulster County.

Host Rob Saffer is the former Executive Director and Producer of the Creative Music Foundation. While living in Brooklyn for 25 years, he served on advisory boards for Celebrate Brooklyn and Symphony Space. He also curated the Brooklyn Museum’s summer jazz series and helped found The Mingus Big Band.
