Nuestra Música: Independence Month (Audio)

July is a month of patriotism in North and South America.  On July 1st the most northern among us celebrated Canada Day, commemorating the shift to self governed entity. July 4th we celebrate the Declaraction of Independence, and today we are celebrating July Independence month in Latin America, presenting Independence day from Argentina, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela.

Also to celebrate July 4 we will be broadcasting a rarely played Star Spangled Banner in Spanish that was commissioned by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1945, as part of his Good Neighbor Policy with Latin America, sung by the Nurse Hero Hispanic Star Choir.

“Nuestra Música,” “Our Music,” presents the rhythms and folklore of Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Cape Verde. From Tango to Flamenco and all Latinx music in between. The show explores the native instruments, languages and traditions played in 22 countries and one territory. Other than Spanish and Portuguese, Nuestra Música presents songs in Quechua, Mapuche, Guaraní, Nahuatl, Gallego, Spanish Basque, and Catalán. Among many styles we present: Tango, Chacarera, Baguala, Zamba with a Z and Samba with and S, Bossa Nova, Cumbia, Llanero, Vallenato, Merengue, Parrandera, Son, Bolero, Ranchera, Corrido, Marimba, Fado, Flamenco, Sevillanas, Jota, Blues, Jazz, Danzon, Mambo and many more.
